All in the name of good times…

Busy busy busy! I am actually up at 5:15 in the morning! Being this busy on a Saturday would normally be a bummer, but since it’s all for the sake of good times, I’m not complaining.

Here was last night’s healthy dinner:

cashew tofu

I planned to try a dish from my Peas and Thank You cookbook, but I decided that was going to take way too much time and energy. I modified it and was relatively pleased. The sauce was good but a wee bit too tangy for me. I’ll definitely make it again, but I won’t add the full amount of apple cider vinegar. Kevin and I enjoyed this meal with chilled pinot grigio.

Here were my workouts for the week:

  • Sunday: Cleaning House (That’s kind of a workout, right? It’s exhausting!)
  • Monday: Elliptical (25 minutes with intervals), Leg Day with Reps in the 12-15 Range
  • Tuesday: 99 Workout (with very modified pushups)
  • Wednesday: Run (2.5 mi), Back Day with Reps in the 8-10 Range
  • Thursday: Skip! (my body needed rest, though I did take a 30-minute walk)
  • Friday: Arc Trainer(30 minutes), Arm Day with 3 Sets of 8-10 Reps
  • Saturday: Run (2 mi, super speedy), I *would* do pilates if I had more time

I don’t plan on eating “clean” all weekend, but wish me luck on doing better than last weekend. Baby steps!

Ooohhhh by the way… aren’t these gorgeous??? I didn’t order them, but I was drooling over my keyboard when I saw them yesterday.

Mini Me n’ Mini Post

Hellooooo! I wish I could share loads of fun pics from the weekend, but I actually didn’t take many. I wish I could tell you all about my healthy weekend, but I failed in that arena as well. Lastly, I wish I was still home, but it’s back to the daily grind. Oh well – at least I had fun!

So what do I have for you? Tidbits from yesterday and a promise for a more enlightening post in the (hopefully-near) future. I also have a blog recap. In case you missed it…

Yesterday, I hit the gym in the morning before Kev and I got started on our housework. I followed my September workout and did leg curls and leg extensions as a superset. I also completed 40 minutes of moderate cardio. Austin Powers (the one with Mini Me) was on television, so that made cardio a bit more enjoyable.

Mini Mesource

I tried to “healthify” my evening by making a grilled veggie wrap, which consisted of eggplant, zucchini, homemade hummus, kalamata olives, and a Flatout wrap. This was the third eggplant wrap I made this weekend. I think I should lay off for a while!

Sadly, I left it on the grill a little too long. It’s an ugly pic, but I’m not so sure eggplant wraps could ever look attractive.

Leia, on the other hand, is always pretty!

She and I relaxed on the couch before I took a break for yet another treat (ice cream n’ granola). Yeah… ending the indulgent weekend on a healthy note didn’t work out so well for me.

Do you have a hard time staying on track on the weekends?

If you stay on track, do you have any tips for me??? 🙂

Matter of Fact, It’s the Weekend

It’s the weekend! Did it catch you by surprise? No? Me neither. Matter of fact, I was practically counting down the hours, not that I don’t love my job or anything…

Speaking of facts, here are some random fun facts for you. You’ve got an assignment – give me 2 random facts about yourself. They could be likes, dislikes, hidden talents, goofy fears, or interesting learning experiences. You get bonus points for funny learning experiences.

  1. I still dream of the fried feta I ordered (numerous times) in Greece.
  2. I never take bubble baths because I get too bored.
  3. I wonder why people my age smoke cigarettes. Come on; we grew up with Red Ribbon Week!
  4. Kev and I met in calculus class at 8:00 a.m. one morning. How romantic…
  5. I love weddings.
  6. I have cat toys littered all around my house – even under a couch or two.
  7. I don’t understand the food truck craze. I like it because I like food, but I don’t get it.
  8. I am not a fan of cupcakes. There. I said it. Don’t hate me.
  9. I hate sitting alone in a room. I had a tv in my room growing up, but I was never in there. I think I watched it 3 times in the 10 years I had it.
  10. If I had to pick one food to eat forever, it’d be pizza. (Bet you coulda’ guessed that!)

Anything interesting? Surprising? Waste of your time? No, don’t answer that last one. J

Have a super weekend, and be sure to check in Monday for a recap. It might include some of this…

Weekend Rewind

Why did the weekend have to end? Ever? Sigh… I think someone’s got a case of the Mondays…

Instead of being bummed about sitting in my cubicle for the next 5 days, I think I’d like to re-live some weekend fun. Thursday, Kev and I celebrated IPA Day with friends. Friday, we grilled out with neighbors. Mmmm… burgers. Saturday, we had a date day. I know you all are probably familiar with “date nights,” but this was sort of an extended version.

We started with some of this:

And continued with this:

floatin

The lake was so calm!

smooth sailin

Then we got cleaned up like twins (I promise I had on a cute skirt and didn’t totally bum it):

date night

And we ordered some of this:

pizza n' beer

I had an Old Hickory Hefe with my pizza. I do not recommend it. I also wasn’t all that crazy about my pizza (caramelized onion, prosciutto, and kalamata olives – thought it would have been better). What I did like – the restaurant had half-pints of beer. I got to try 2 beers but only had the quantity of one. Score! Kev liked his pizza:

shrimp on pizza? ewww

So to make up for pizza mediocrity, I stopped here on the way home.

fro yo

Kev doesn’t eat sweets, so he didn’t get any frozen yogurt. I used to feel like a fat kid when he made me get ice cream alone… I got over it.

Last but not least, I defied my podiatrist’s orders Sunday. A girl can’t wear sneakers to church ya’ know!

nude pumps

So that was the weekend in a nutshell. I hope this upcoming weekend is a little healthier. Couldn’t be toooo much worse, right? 🙂 Stay tuned this week, I’m starting a new workout and have a new lunch bowl recipe.

What was the best thing you did this weekend?

An Attempt at a Healthier Weekend

Here is my disclaimer. I did not have a “healthy” weekend. It was neither low-calorie nor active, and I didn’t really make an effort to maintain my regular sleeping patterns either. However…

Given that I usually indulge in a few beers, entire pizzas, and a handful of other indulgences, I can say this weekend was healthier than most. I’m fairly good at sticking to a nutritious diet throughout the week, and I know I really need to clean up my weekends to be the weight I want to be. On the other hand, knowledge doesn’t always mean power, especially willpower.

Shape Magazine helps explain why weekends matter:

According to a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, women consume about 115 more calories on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday than they do on weekdays. “Those extra 300 to 400 calories can leave you nine pounds heavier by the year’s end,” says Barry Popkin, Ph.D., the study’s lead author.

So what was different this weekend? For starters, I maintained balanced, low-calorie, produce-packed meals all day Friday, and I ordered this at dinner:

steamer

What did I want to order? Beer with cashew chicken in a high-sugar and high-sodium brown sauce. What did I actually order? Steamed veggies, steamed shrimp, brown rice, terriyaki sauce on the side, and a water. The waitress brought white rice instead, but ya’ win some, lose some. Seriously – I was so proud of myself for this meal!

On Saturday, I had a heavy but fill breakfast sandwich at a coffee shop. Breakfast included this little gem.

Lattelicious! I had half a sub for lunch, and a home cooked meal for dinner. I opted for a chicken breast instead of ribs. I don’t like grits or ribs; how do I call myself Southern?

I may have over-eaten a bit, and had some cheesecake for dessert, but nothing was too crazy. I also had a couple bottled beers (surprise). I love draft beer, but 16-oz pints add up a lot fast than a 12-oz bottles.

Last night, Kev and I enjoyed roast Brussels sprouts with all-natural chicken sausages. I prefer to eat in-season produce, but sprouts are too good for one-season only!

Do you stick to a “diet” on the weekend, or do you go a little crazy too?

If you keep your weekends healthy, what are your secrets!?!?

NuNaturals Review

Thank goodness for the weekend!  I’m so happy it’s Saturday.  Kevin and I have stated this is going to be a no-work Saturday.  Woohoo!  We’ll be boating, dining with friends, and partying it up tonight to celebrate a buddy’s birthday.  I’m pretty happy to not be wielding a paintbrush, fighting with my Swiffer, or trying not to burn things in the kitchen.  Yup – today will be a good day.  To top it off, I’m still in my pajamas.  That never happens, but I could really take a liking to it!

I was going to run today, but I’m not out sweating my butt off for three reasons.

  1. This is a no-work day, remember
  2. My back is sore from housework, spin class, and more housework
  3. My legs are actually pretty sore from spin too
I hadn’t taken a spin class since my California trip with FitSugar, and the other last time was at least a year ago.  I forgot how much I love love love it!  I was up at level 17 for quite a while, and I was totally drenched in sweat by the end of class.
bike

That's a lotta minute and a lotta miles!

Then I went home to paint, walk to TJs, bake, and cook dinner.  Whew.  No wonder my legs are tired.
**********
So let me tell you about this baking experience.  I used NuNatura’s MoreFiber Baking Blend instead of sugar to make Martha Stewart’s Vanilla Cupcakes.  I wanted to use a tried-and-true recipe for quality control.  I also chose to use 100% organic butter (instead of a subsitute) and all-purpose white flour (instead of wheat) to make sure all other constants were held equal.  (Science Nerd Alert)
mix

mix

These did not smell sweet and scrumptious while baking.  Then they came out of the oven… uh oh…
cupfails

Cupfails

As you can see, they have cracks on top.  After letting them cool, I tried one.  Bleh.  They’re not spongy and sweet.  They’re dense and bland.  They taste and feel like a mix between shortbread cookies and white cake.  I won’t bother frosting them.
I was going to give these to our friend whose birthday we’ll be celebrating tonight, but I think the garbage can will get them instead.
**********
I tried two other NuNaturals recipes – both were made up by me.  I first put the Pure Liquid Vanilla in my oats with cherries.  It was good, but I am not sure I put quite enough in to taste it.
Next, I put the Pure Liquid Cocoa Extract in a recipe I recreated.  I first tried the drink when I was in Greece.
throwback

Throwback pics are OK, right?

Mom and I kept ordering “Nescafe” on our trip.  It is essentially milk, sugar, instant coffee, ice, and more sugar.  Yum!  Today, I used milk, instant coffee, and the Cocoa Extract, hoping for a very sweet and also lightly mocha flavor.
nescafe
Nope.  Not so good.  Not very sweet.  I used about 10 more drops than the “recommended” amount, and it just wasn’t doing it for me.
Another fail.  I know others like stevia, but I can’t say I’ll ever be adding it to my food again.  At least I’m honest!
Have a good Saturday!  I’m off to go brew some real coffee…

Belated Weekend Recap

I know that weekend recaps usually occur on Mondays, but this one is a little behind.  I really wanted to post my new workout the very same day I started it.

As you probably know, Kevin and I hosted company this weekend.  I didn’t get to try any of our visitor’s home brews, but he left a few for Kevin and I in the fridge.  Yawhooo!  If you all ready Saturday’s post, you know there’s another timebomb in my fridge.  It’s crazy, but I didn’t get into that either even though it’s my favorite beer.

So what did I do?  I’ll show you through a lens.  Naturally, the pics focus on the food and drink of the weekend, but I don’t think you really want pictures of me grocery shopping and cleaning my house.  Didn’t think so…

On Saturday, we went here:

brewery

The local brewery also offers some food in their taproom, so the guys ate lunch there.  I, on the other hand, checked the menu online before we left and saw no healthy options, so I enjoyed a pb n’ jelly sandwich on the way.

peeb sammich

The guys got one of these.  Normally I’d be jealous, but I was happy with my brew.

brat

I was driving, so my portions were more like this.

mr & mrs beer

On the way home, we stopped by here and got these.  I’m not even a fan of buffalo blue cheese chips, but I had a couple anyway.  Fail.

buffalo blue cheese chips

We stopped by a beer store on the way home, and Kevin picked up a six pack.  I wanted a pack of non-alcoholic beer, but the shop didn’t have any that was cold.  Bummer.  I stuck to water until dinner.

Speaking of dinner – the picture says it all.

bronx bomber pizza

*** I totally switched gears Sunday, and my heart/kidneys/liver thanked me. ***

I ate TJs raisin bran for breakfast with almond milk and black coffee.  I cleaned all day, except for when I took a trip to TJs.  My body was tired, and my feet were hurting!

Kevin and I both had grilled eggplant, grilled onion, spinach, and hummus pressed in a wrap for lunch.  (Not Pictured)  It was so tasty I made mini ones after without the wrap.  Aren’t they cute!?!

snackums

For dinner, I made scallops for the first time.  Scallops, grilled eggplant, red onion, orange bell pepper, and of course, olive oil.  It was totally fusion and totally rockin.  I served Kevin brown rice with his.  Oh, and we split a mango for an appetizer.

scallopsThis was so good!  I cooked the rest of the scallops again last night, but I served them with the rest of the black beans, brown rice, spinach, onions, lime, and cilantro.  I put the cilantro with most of the spinach and the juice of half a lime in the food processor so that it would mix well with the beans n’ rice.  Another interesting dish.

Have you made up any odd/unique/fusion meals lately?

I’m Not At Work

Yup.  I’m not at work today.  That is big news because I’m so friggin happy about it.  It’s okay… I’ll move on to other news now so that I’m not rubbing it in, but I just had to share that tidbit of info.  See, that’s why the blog post is late today.  I got up at 6 instead of 5 to workout, and then I had a dermatologist appointment.
*Notice the Slick Segway to New Topic*
Speaking of dermatologist, my Eat for Good Skin diet only sort of worked.  I think my skin’s tone has become more even, but it’s still breaking out like crazy.  Bummer.  I am now on a new, slightly scary prescription for my acne.  It is supposed to make my potassium levels skyrocket, so I have to lay off the bananas, potatoes, and other goodies.  In addition, it’s mainly used for those with high blood pressure.  Great.  I already have low but healthy but blood pressure, so I’m going to be walking around like a zombie until this clears up a bit.  Wonderful.
Moving on…
I started my weekend with a glass of wine, an ounce of parm cheese, and three kalamata olives.  I tried to take this picture…

Unwind in 3... 2... 1...

but then this happened.  Thanks Cleo for making the picture much more interesting.

cleo

I'd reach for it too if I lived off dry kibble!

After that, I had Italian on the brain.  Should I have cooked healthy Italian?  Yes.  Did I?  No.  This was dinner.

pizza

Unhealthy and Delicious

I’d love to tell you Kevin and I split that, but that would be a lie.  I’d also like to say I ate half and saved the rest for later, but that too would be a lie.  So let’s just not talk about pizza any more.
On a positive note, last night’s pizza led to a killer green monster smoothie today and an awesome workout.  I picked up very heavy things and put them down quite a few times.

Thanks, Gina, for posting this commercial.  I love it.

The meat-head in the video above reminds me of something I wanted to mention.  I received a lovely compliment today at the gym.  Another morning regular was there, and he’s a total meat-head.  We occasionally say hello, but we don’t talk much.  Today he told me that it looked like I had recently put on a good bit of muscle, particularly in my legs.  I would generally be offended if a man said this to me because it would be really creepy, but given the source, it really made me happy.

We talked a wee bit about protein supplementation and my fav move for ultimate quad definition.  His comment pumped me up, and I totally rocked my bench step-ups.  I went until total failure on my left side, which felt odd.  When I tried to step up one last time, my leg said, “Sorry Tiff, but we’re done here,” and I was okay with that.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  I’m off to see the in-laws.  Hopefully I’ll get a run in tomorrow… if I can feel my legs!

Do you talk to other regulars in the gym or on the trails?  What do you think about gym compliments/remarks – creepy or cool?

The Early Bird Gets to Leave Early

Before we begin, I need to get something off my chest…

Dear Trip Advisor,

I love your site, and I love trips.  However, I do not love your tempting emails.  Quit alerting me to great deals on flights to London, Dublin, Buenos Aires, and other glorious destinations.  You helped sucker me into a trip to Austria in March, which was lovely, but I have no more vacation time.  Quit torturing me with your tempting offers; I can’t take it anymore!

Thanks,
Tiff

Flashback

Flashback to Austria Trip

Now that I have successfully un-subscribed to Trip Advisor’s emails, I can get into today’s real post.  It’s about love.  No, it’s not quite a Hallmark card, but let’s just say it’s not about beer either.  Come on, it’s Love Sweat and Beers – not Blood Sweat and Tears.  That wouldn’t make for fun reading, would it?  Well… unless it was written by Jack Bauer.

Too much Netflix?

I think Jack could beat up a honey badger.

Weekend travel is my excuse for today’s missed workout.  I came to work early so that I can leave early this afternoon.  Yes, I got to work at 7 a.m. after my hour-long commute.  No, I did not get my butt out of bed at 4 to squeeze in a workout.

It’s time for my yearly family reunion.  It’s a very small and simple gathering, but I still get excited about it.  I like showing off the hubby, seeing my grandpa, and spending time with my parents.  Ooohhh… I also like my great aunt’s caramel cake.  I like the joy she gets from seeing my great uncle devour it.  Did that make sense?  She makes it for all of us, but she knows he really gets excited about it, which in turn makes her happy, which in double-turn makes me happy.  (Double-turn?  Really Tiff???)

Another Flashback: Christmas 2009

I will try to make a mini post at some point this weekend.  Of course, if you follow me on Twitter @LoveSweatBeers, you’ll be the first to know if I do!

Now, I’d like talk about my Thursday night.  See, I love my family, and of course I love my husband, but I am an only child.  I love being an only child.  I am fairly social and love spending time with others.

However…

Every once in a while, I still need that alone time.  Loner?  Homebody?  Probably.  Call it what you must, but I have coined it Only Child Syndrome.  I get irritable and frustrated when I don’t have home alone time.

Soooo I sort of kicked Kev out of the house last night.  He went out for drinks with friends, and I had time with pajamas, kitties, and The Little Mermaid.  I even had cereal for dinner.  Life is good.

If you thought I was kidding…

Anyone else need alone time?  Anyone else still love Disney movies?

Is it Friday yet???

Back to the daily grind.  Ugh.  Ma’, do I haaaave to go to work today?  I think I’m sick.  (Insert fake cough here!)  The weekend went by waaaaay too fast.  Let’s recap, shall we?

First, I wanted to run Saturday and couldn’t due to an injury.  Instead of running, I sat on my booty and wrote a post about plain vs black coffee – and by the way, I made a mistake.  Ooopsies!  I meant to say “regular” – not “plain.”  Nevertheless, I am still dumbfounded by the fact that regular coffee is not the same as black.  Now… moving on…

Kev, our company, and I had lake fun, beer fun, and dinner fun before indulging in a little more beer fun.  I was the designated driver for the weekend, so my tastebuds didn’t get tooooo much beer fun.  However, I did try a lovely new brew with my bbq bacon burger (heck yea I got it with fries) on Saturday evening.  It was a French Broad 13 Rebels pale ale.  It paired flawlessly with the burger.

French Broad

French Broad Brewery Pale Ale

My hip felt better Sunday, so I finally got to try out my new armband.  I guess tunes make you run faster because I did pretty well – despite running through a hilly nearby neighborhood on a hot day.  Yay!  I did 4.4 miles in 37:22, and the first 4 miles of it were completed in 33:47.  That made me feel pretty good.  I didn’t really want to get up and work out today, but I still got my sweat on.  I did a heavy day of chest + shoulders with 30 minutes on the elliptical.  What a great way to start the day!

Now it’s time for breakfast (my second-favorite time of day).  No more parfaits here; I’m bringin’ back the oats!  Notice the little black things in my uncooked oats.  Those are chia seeds, which I tried for the first time just a week or two ago.

blueberrry chia

Blueberry Chia Oats

Chia, Cha-cha-cha, Chia seeds are the same little buggers sold as “pets” about 5-10 years ago.  So why am I eating these?  Well FitSugar helps to explain how these little buggars pack a strong nutritional punch.  Fiber, calcium, protein, and omega-3s, oh my!  Click here for the nutritional profile.

  • Did you have a good weekend?  What was the best thing you did?
  • Have you tried chia seeds?  If so, what do you think of them?
