Go Tigers!

This weekend my Tigers did not disappoint. Clemson had a great game, and I had a great weekend. I tried a new beer, ate a healthy dinner, and relaxed with friends on Friday. Saturday was a bit more exciting and included significant tailgating. I’ll spare you all the nitty-gritty details, but there was some of this

and too much of this (okay… all of it).

Mellow Mushroom calzone

Although I had a great time in Clemson, I took some time Sunday to recount my indulgences***. I discovered that I ate/drank twice the calories I normally eat/drink on a weekday. (By the way, dinner was paired with a Victory Hop Devil.)

Since I often indulge on weekends, I’m not floored by this discovery, but it was still an eye-opener for me. I don’t regret eating my weight in calzone because it really was that delicious, but I hope to be more mindful of my splurges in the future.

To help heal my veggie-starved, fat-stuffed body, Sunday was a bit healthier. I drank water and coconut water to combat the sodium of Saturday’s treats. I also ate my greens.

The dinner above was friggin’ awesome. I had been drooling over that salad dressing in the store for a while now, and I’m so glad I finally bought it. The salad included spinach, dressing, half a pear, and cashews. As you can see, I added a side of French bread.

How was your weekend? Did your team win too?

An Attempt at a Healthier Weekend

Here is my disclaimer. I did not have a “healthy” weekend. It was neither low-calorie nor active, and I didn’t really make an effort to maintain my regular sleeping patterns either. However…

Given that I usually indulge in a few beers, entire pizzas, and a handful of other indulgences, I can say this weekend was healthier than most. I’m fairly good at sticking to a nutritious diet throughout the week, and I know I really need to clean up my weekends to be the weight I want to be. On the other hand, knowledge doesn’t always mean power, especially willpower.

Shape Magazine helps explain why weekends matter:

According to a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, women consume about 115 more calories on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday than they do on weekdays. “Those extra 300 to 400 calories can leave you nine pounds heavier by the year’s end,” says Barry Popkin, Ph.D., the study’s lead author.

So what was different this weekend? For starters, I maintained balanced, low-calorie, produce-packed meals all day Friday, and I ordered this at dinner:

steamer

What did I want to order? Beer with cashew chicken in a high-sugar and high-sodium brown sauce. What did I actually order? Steamed veggies, steamed shrimp, brown rice, terriyaki sauce on the side, and a water. The waitress brought white rice instead, but ya’ win some, lose some. Seriously – I was so proud of myself for this meal!

On Saturday, I had a heavy but fill breakfast sandwich at a coffee shop. Breakfast included this little gem.

Lattelicious! I had half a sub for lunch, and a home cooked meal for dinner. I opted for a chicken breast instead of ribs. I don’t like grits or ribs; how do I call myself Southern?

I may have over-eaten a bit, and had some cheesecake for dessert, but nothing was too crazy. I also had a couple bottled beers (surprise). I love draft beer, but 16-oz pints add up a lot fast than a 12-oz bottles.

Last night, Kev and I enjoyed roast Brussels sprouts with all-natural chicken sausages. I prefer to eat in-season produce, but sprouts are too good for one-season only!

Do you stick to a “diet” on the weekend, or do you go a little crazy too?

If you keep your weekends healthy, what are your secrets!?!?

Gravy Train to Healthy Train

Diet schmiet, who needs it?  Apparently I do, and after this weekend, it’s time to buckle-down on some better habits.  If you thought I lead a healthy example of good nutrition and regular workouts, you are wrong (and you’re probably not an avid reader of this blog).  I’m used to a few splurges on the weekend, but this weekend with the in-laws takes the cake.  Cake?  Did someone say cake???  Ha – that’s been me lately, so after I recap my weekend via pictures, you’ll see why I’ll be back on the calorie-counting train for a while.

I already blogged about Thursday’s splurge, and after that meal, I had plans to be more mindful of nutrition on my weekend trip.  Well… this was Friday’s dinner…

Not Many Healthy Options on That Menu...

It was good Southern food.  The okra wasn’t as good as my mommy’s, but it was still tasty.  Those little things to the left are hush puppies.  I love those little buggars!  The beer was not impressive, but at $1 per draft, I couldn’t turn it down.

I tried to run on Saturday.  To my dismay, Kevin’s parents’ live in an area that is not safe for runners (no shoulder or sidewalk but lots of turns and hills), so I drove up to a local school’s track.  I was pumped to do some speed training, but this is what I found.

No Run 4 You

My motivation took a nose dive, and I gave up.  Run = Fail

We had more Southern cookin’ for lunch and dinner Saturday.  No exercise and lots of food makes Tiff an uncomfy girl.  Lunch included a hearty chicken salad sandwich and blueberry n’ peach cobbler.  I know cupcakes are in vogue right now, but they don’t even touch the greatness of pies and cobblers!  They’re two of my (many) weaknesses.

Dinner was… interesting…

We went to an Italian restaurant.  Never have I seen fried pickles and jalapeno poppers on an Italian restaurant’s menu.

Italiamerican Food?

The food was edible.  Don’t let the cheese fool you; the sauce and noodles were not so yummy.  In fact, I was kicking myself for not ordering a side salad and baked sweet potato for my meal.  You guys know how much I love sweet potatoes!

Cheese = Good ~ Ziti n' Sauce = Meh

Sooooo… Sunday I spent allllll day in the kitchen.  Don’t worry, recipes are soon to come.  It’s time to get back on the healthy train!  I could use your support and bikini-body tips, so if you’ve got any, send them my way!  Luckily, I got a great workout in first thing this morning.

What was the best thing you did this weekend?
