Reading the Sunday Paper… or Sunday Blogs

I know I don’t post on Sundays, but I want to share some info and a little link love.

Info: I worked hard on the house yesterday, and I made it to the lake for the afternoon.  A Paulaner Hefe came along with me.  That, in my opinion, is the epitome of wheat beer.  It is still brewed to the Reinheitsgebot, the German purity laws of 1516, and it’s good!  (Kev hates it, but no one asked him.)

Today I woke up not wanting to work out at all.  I haven’t wanted to skip a run that badly in a loooong time.  After laying in bed, wasting time, procrastinating, and trying to get some sort of motivation, I finally got up.  I got up and put on my running gear.  I ran.  It was horrible.  It was a very difficult run, even though I didn’t go far.  At mile 2, I got a cramp and needed to walk a little.  In the end, I finished exactly 3 miles in 25:35, including that walk time.  I guess that isn’t so bad after all!  As one of my favorite workout mantras goes: You never regret a workout.  Too true.  I rewarded myself with a smoothie in a bowl.  It has raspberries, spinach, banana, skim milk, and all-natural, vanilla, soy protein.  Yum!

Link Love: Here are a few posts and articles that have made me smile lately.  I hope you enjoy!

Corey at Learning Patience posted a great-looking recipe for cinnamon lentil soup.  I can’t wait to try it!  Martha Stewart recommends freezing wine you don’t finish for cooking purposes, and I have some in my freezer right now.  Yes, I’m sorry to break the news – there’s no excuse to finish the bottle every time.

Travel & Leisure posted a link to the best beer cities.  I figured Nashville and Charleston would be lower, but I also thought Boston and Chicago would be higher.  I totally see how they chose the Portlands.

Charleston 2010 - No Beer Here!

I really enjoyed Tina’s post at Faith, Fitness, and Fun about the annoying comments people make.  What are comments you hate?  I don’t particularly like it when people make comments about how I must enjoy working out.  Let’s get this straight.  Working out is no picnic for me.  I like the feeling I get afterwards, but I would much rather sleep in during the week or watch tv at night.  It’s called dedication – not joy.

I also really enjoyed Brittany’s post about extreme couponing.  I’m glad someone agrees with me.  Great – you got an amazing deal on junk food.  Good for you.  Too bad you had to buy 10 boxes.  Don’t get me wrong. I love a good deal, and I cut coupons.  But even I have my limits.  My mema had a great point: if you weren’t going to buy it when it wasn’t on sale, it’s not a deal to buy it when it is.

Lastly, enjoy this pic from Beer Runner, originally from the London Daily Telegraph

I hope you enjoyed the link love.  More importantly, I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A Spin-Off Kind of Saturday

I wanted to attend spin class today.  I never get to spin anymore, and that makes me sad.  I was a weekly spinner at my old gym for 3 reasons:

  1. They had a Friday class that started super early. I pre-burned my beers.
  2. The instructor totally kicked my butt.  I walked out of that class with jello legs and wet clothes every time.
  3. The instructor also refrained from “jumps.”  I can stay up a while for climbs and some intervals, but my knees don’t like jumps one bit.

I quit going because no classes at my current gym meet my schedule.  The one today starts at 9:15 a.m.  There are a few reasons I probably won’t spin this morning.  I prefer to get a better head start on the day, and Kevin and I have a lot to do.  We are doing a few renovations to our guest bathroom, and we want to finish everything this weekend while still allowing a little time for some boating.

Also, I wanted cereal this morning.  I ate cereal.  I ate 2 to 3 servings of cereal.  I’m also drinking coffee.  Class starts in an hour.  I think this is a recipe for disaster.

I’ll get around to spin… one day…

I’d like to fill you in on my Friday, and I have just the pictures to do it!

I went to the gym, and I had a great workout.  After lifting (big sets yesterday of about 12-15 reps), I used the art trainer for 25 minutes.  At the 5-, 10-, and 15-minute marks I dropped to the floor to do 10 pushups.  I know that doesn’t sound like much, but pushups get my heart rate up; they’re like sprints for my arms.  Also, since it was chest/back day, this machine and my additional pushups really helped burn out the muscles.

I don't always look like a ragamuffin at the gym, just most of the time.

I did not leave the gym in curlers.  I did, however, leave in running shoes.  I brought other shoes, but I walk three blocks to work, plus lots of stairs.

I tried my overnight oats in a jar when I got to work.  I should have had something with more protein.  Actually, I should have had something else period.  These were edible, but I’m not a fan.  Oats should be hot… or in muffins, or granola, or meatloaf, or smoothies… Okay, oats can be in a lot of things, but cold milk in a jar is not one of those things.

Later, Kevin and I spent some time at Lowe’s.  I get serious A.D.D. in home improvement stores.   We  were going to have champagne once we finished working on the house, buttttt Kev wanted to open it early.  Needless to say, I did not object.

For dinner, I made pasta with meat sauce, and it was sooooooo delicious!  I love that simple meal!  I added extra oregano, garlic, onion, and tomato, but it is still pretty darn basic.  I also have to recommend Organic Whole Wheat Penne with Milled Flax by Hodgson Mill.  It’s my all-time favorite and can be purchased in bulk at Amazon.

Okay, now it’s time to finish my coffee and get back to work!

Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!  It is a happy weekend, isn’t it?  I had fun on vacation, but I can’t wait to get home!  I miss my bed, my furry children, and my friends.  Kevin and I will get in late from the airport tonight, but we have a cookout planned for tomorrow.  I love playing hostess.  🙂

My last full day in Cali was very entertaining.  I had half a TJ’s sprouted wheat bagel with light whipped cream cheese for breakfast, along with a green apple and some coffee.  Then I tried my first Physique 57 class out in Beverly Hills with the FitSugar reps.  It was sooooo hard!  The workout was so different from anything I usually do, and my thighs were on fire.  Considering the “newcomer only” special was $210 for one month, I don’t think I’ll be doing it again any time soon.

I then rudely stole kindly accepted a Larabar from Kellan to feed my aching muscles.  Our next class was YAS.  YAS was 30 minutes of spinning followed by 30 minutes of yoga.  I love spin, and I was amazed at how well my body took to it.  My legs were hurting walking into the studio, but they felt better after only a few songs.  Perhaps the upbeat instructor and her amazing playlist helped.

I had never done a yoga class before, so I was pretty intimidated.  It wasn’t hard though.  Actually, after the Physique 57 and the spin, stretching felt really good.  My body was so warmed up from the spin that I got much deeper into the poses, especially pigeon and downward facing dog.

I then got a delicious eggplant wrap from TJ’s for lunch and met Kevin at the W Hotel’s rooftop pool/bar.  It was crazy!

At 3 in the afternoon, some guy shook up and sprayed a $3,900 bottle of Dom Perignon on a few scantily clad females.  Kev and I soaked up as much people-watching as we did sunshine!  I stuck to Amstel Light, and I was shocked to see a $75,000 bottle of champagne on the menu.  Whaaaaaa???  (No, that’s not my cigarette butt in the picture below!  haha)

We then cleaned up for happy hour and dinner.  We had a happy hour at a mediocre pub, and then we hit up Wood and Vine for dinner.  Yes, it was at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine.  I guess it’s kind of a pun?  Anyway… we split a tapas plate, and our favorite cheese we tried was a Spanish goat cheese with the consistency of cheddar, so not a spread.  The cheese is technically called, “Queso de Cabra.”  It paired perfectly with our Stone IPAs.  Beer + Cheese = Heaven  We also split a small plate of seared scallops.

We then contemplated hitting some of the hot spots, such as Whiskey A Go Go or the Sky Bar, but we decided to just go to bed.  I felt I got a club experience all afternoon at that pool.  As always, thanks for reading!  Time to pack and hit the road.
