Running Shoes & Wands

The wand chooses the wizard… it’s not always clear why.

—Ollivander

My new running shoes! Keep reading to find out how buying running shoes is like purchasing a wand…

mizuno

First off, old shoes can lead to injury. I have Mizunos, which are cheaper than other brands, but they do not last as long. Not even the Weasleys can use hand-me-down or worn-out wands, so don’t even think about using old running shoes!

Ron Weasley

If you don’t know the style you need, or if you are just interested in changing it up, you benefit from visiting a specialty store. Harry and his buddies went to Ollivander’s. I’ve visited a number of specialty shops, including a few Fleet Feet Sports stores in various states.

The knowledgeable sales staff in any specialty store should watch you run in the shoes you try on. They view your stride and help you find the best fit. Some stores even record your feet while you run on a treadmill. I never knew how wobbly my feet looked until seeing them on camera!

Mr. Ollivander lets his patrons test their wands too. That’s important, especially if you blow things up in the store like Harry.

This weekend, I already knew I wanted a new pair of Mizuno shoes, so I went to Dick’s Sporting Goods. I tried on two Mizuno stability shoes. (Stability helps with wobbly feet!) I went with the more expensive pair. You can’t scrimp on wands either. I doubt phoenix tails and dragon scales come cheap!

Don’t be embarrassed trying on shoes. The last time I bought a pair of shoes, I had the sweet sales lady bring out 7 or 8 pairs, and yes, I ran around the store in most all of them.  Ollivander cant wand-fit a patron on the first try either.

shoes

Lastly, don’t buy what’s cool or cute. It’s rarely the best thing for you. Dad wouldn’t let me get anything cute for my first running shoe. After running through my first good pair, he analyzed the bottoms of my shoes to see where I wore the most tread and cushion. Then he suggested my next pair. My physical therapist later recommended the exact same shoe my dad had selected. Trust me; they weren’t cute!  I doubt it was cool to get the sibling wand of Valdemort, but you know what – Harry’s too cool to care.

Oh, I got a pair of cross trainers this weekend too. They’re sooooo awesome!

Do you have a favorite brand of runners, walkers, or cross trainers? Ever been to a specialty shop?

Hello Weekend!

Good morning!  Were you up early today, or did you get some needed rest?  I guess I was somewhere in between.

I had a half-day off from work yesterday (thank goodness), and instead of heading home after lunch, I got a massage.  It was pretty awesome.  The massage place is near my house and also dangerously close to our expensive, fancy, health-food store.  I decided to pop in to get the guys some supplies (chips, frozen pizza, and beer).

The Loot

What  I actually got was a little more selfish.  Seriously, I know this is supposed to be a healthy store, but I always walk out with the most decadent products!  The best thing I got was that beer.  See it?  That’s my favorite beer, or at least one of my favs, Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest.  It’s an elusive seasonal that is only sold in large bottles. I can’t wait to taste it; the bottle is a little time bomb in my fridge!

Last night we went out with another couple, and I wore this.  How do you make a Talbots cardi cute?  Wedges + Mini Skirt, duh  🙂

Speaking of beer….. and I got an Old Hickory Death By Hops.  Major yum.  I’m not going to give it a full review here, but I’ll make a few minor points.  Medium carbination, golden amber color, little bite, and hops hops hops and hops.  Yup – that about covers it.

so good

Death By Hops

I also ordered a salad.  What???  Yeah – I felt guilty after that muffin, so that’s a hold-the-cheese, hold-the-rice, salsa-chicken salad.  It was surprisingly really good.  I was glad I had some dressing on the side since a few of those jalapenos were pretty intense!

You know what you can do when you order a salad?  Have a little ice cream for dessert of course!  (This healthy train thing isn’t working so well for me…)

Moving on… this morning I had a sweaty 4-mile run.  It was so muggy that as soon as I stepped outside I was soaked.  Yuck.  But I ran hard anyway, and I treated myself to a bowl of goodness.  What a great reward for my efforts!

Yogi Bear Tiff

I did more yoga yesterday and today.  Yesterday morning, I finally tried one of the workout videos Jeannette Jenkins sent me from Cali.  It was her Power Yoga video, and it definitely had a kick to it.  It’s not nearly my fav yoga routine, but I liked how quickly she went through all the poses.  That warmed me up enough to get a deeper stretch.  She says “inhale… exhale” for ever pose change, which is good, but I felt like I would hyperventalite if I actually breathed that quickly.  Maybe it works if you get out of breath doing her workout?

Anyway… today the running buddy and I went for a run.  It was quick but not fast, and it was not our typical three-mile jog.  I think we only went about 2.25 miles or so, but that’s good for me.  I’m feeling better, so there’s no use hurting myself.

Upon my return, I did this awesome Post-run Yoga Flexibility Routine from Runner’s World.  I do this alllll the time.  Then, I finished up with this super simple (and short) pilates workout from Exercise TV.  Oh, and I also had coffee brewed at home – yay for non-office coffee!

I Break for Coffee

Although today I’m sticking with my Love Grown Foods granola n’ blueberry parfait (never gets old), I’d like to share a recipe with you that I made for breakfast last weekend.  I was thinking about it today since I’ll probably make it again this weekend.  I’m already excited about it, and frankly, being this excited about oats is kind of odd.

The Maine Attraction Oats (get the name?  pun intended – these oats have more blueberries than the state of Maine – well… not really, but it still reminds me of  a Maine classic: blueberry pie!)

Ingredients: (I wish I had measured, but sorry, I didn’t – this is what I think I used)

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • approx 1/2 cup water (but it depends how liquid you like your oats)
  • 1/2 or 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 long graham cracker (mine had one bite taken out, but you can approximate)
  • 1 or 2 (or 4) tsp maple syrup

First, gather up some goodness, and wash your berries.

goodness

Cook your oats, water, and half your berries for one minute in the microwave on HIGH.  This makes a couple berries squishy, so don’t worry, that’s a good thing.  You could also add chia seeds here, but I didn’t have any at the time.

Stir in the cinnamon, all of part of the syrup, and the remaining berries, and crumble the other half of the cracker on top.

yumness

It’s not a measuring spoon, but this isn’t rocket science.  Microwave for another minute on HIGH.  Keep in mind that your oats might overflow, so keep an eye on the bowl!

oats 1

You might think that looks good (it totally does), but it’s not the finished product.  We still have more graham (and possibly more syrup) to add.

pie

Ta-da!  Who says pie isn’t for breakfast???

Do you like sweet or savory breakfasts?  What is your favorite way to dress up plain oats?

Gravy Train to Healthy Train

Diet schmiet, who needs it?  Apparently I do, and after this weekend, it’s time to buckle-down on some better habits.  If you thought I lead a healthy example of good nutrition and regular workouts, you are wrong (and you’re probably not an avid reader of this blog).  I’m used to a few splurges on the weekend, but this weekend with the in-laws takes the cake.  Cake?  Did someone say cake???  Ha – that’s been me lately, so after I recap my weekend via pictures, you’ll see why I’ll be back on the calorie-counting train for a while.

I already blogged about Thursday’s splurge, and after that meal, I had plans to be more mindful of nutrition on my weekend trip.  Well… this was Friday’s dinner…

Not Many Healthy Options on That Menu...

It was good Southern food.  The okra wasn’t as good as my mommy’s, but it was still tasty.  Those little things to the left are hush puppies.  I love those little buggars!  The beer was not impressive, but at $1 per draft, I couldn’t turn it down.

I tried to run on Saturday.  To my dismay, Kevin’s parents’ live in an area that is not safe for runners (no shoulder or sidewalk but lots of turns and hills), so I drove up to a local school’s track.  I was pumped to do some speed training, but this is what I found.

no run

No Run 4 You

My motivation took a nose dive, and I gave up.  Run = Fail

We had more Southern cookin’ for lunch and dinner Saturday.  No exercise and lots of food makes Tiff an uncomfy girl.  Lunch included a hearty chicken salad sandwich and blueberry n’ peach cobbler.  I know cupcakes are in vogue right now, but they don’t even touch the greatness of pies and cobblers!  They’re two of my (many) weaknesses.

Dinner was… interesting…

We went to an Italian restaurant.  Never have I seen fried pickles and jalapeno poppers on an Italian restaurant’s menu.

Italiamerican Food?

The food was edible.  Don’t let the cheese fool you; the sauce and noodles were not so yummy.  In fact, I was kicking myself for not ordering a side salad and baked sweet potato for my meal.  You guys know how much I love sweet potatoes!

ziti

Cheese = Good ~ Ziti n' Sauce = Meh

Sooooo… Sunday I spent allllll day in the kitchen.  Don’t worry, recipes are soon to come.  It’s time to get back on the healthy train!  I could use your support and bikini-body tips, so if you’ve got any, send them my way!  Luckily, I got a great workout in first thing this morning.

What was the best thing you did this weekend?

Ding Ding Ding Da-Da Ding Ding

Ding Ding Ding DaDa Ding Ding… Under Pressure… Ding Ding Ding DaDa Ding Ding – Sorry, I was channeling David Bowie this morning.  This post is about being under pressure.  No, nothing big is really weighing me down, and no monkeys are riding around on my back.  However, there are a few of life’s pressures worth mentioning (three to be exact).

1 – Do you ever put pressure on yourself to push yourself to the limit, even when it may not be the best idea?  My three-mile Thursday run today got me thinking again.  I have been pressuring myself lately to do a half marathon.  I want to do it.  I do.  But that’s a lot of running.  I know the cons outweigh the pros on this one.  I don’t think my knees or my patience could handle all that training.  Training would also lead to weight gain since I’d be eating to fuel my running.  So why am I even considering this?  Pride issues?  Probably – but I still want to do it.

2 – Do you feel pressure to be more polite than confident?  I do, and I think I’m not the only one.  In a way, that’s a good thing – otherwise we’d all be a bunch of jerks.  However, try and tell me you haven’t’ done or at least heard this before…

  • You look great in that dress!
  • Thanks.  I hate the way it tightens around my ____ (insert perceived flaw here).

The other day I told Kevin that he has great dimples.  You know what he said?  “Yeah.”  Imagine that coupled with a sly, dimple-showing smirk.  I had to laugh.  That was a good response, but I’m not used to hearing responses like that.  I usually compliment my girl friends, but the feedback is generally negative.  How is he so confident?  More importantly, how can we all be more like that???

curlers

I’m confident enough to leavethe gym like this…

3 – Do pretty pictures in store flyers pressure you into buying things you don’t need?  Nope, this pressure is definitely not weighing me down, but I’m still totally serious.  I saw party supplies on sale in my local Target flyer.  I want to have a party.  My parties are usually epic fails, but Kevin’s good at throwing parties.  Why do you think I was attracted to him in college?!?!  Just kidding!  We got a kegerator back in January or February, and we’ve only had one party and one keg with it.  Instead of getting beer for a party, I think we need a party to justify getting beer!

empty

Yup... Just Checking... Still Outta' Beer

On a side note, I had a nice workout yesterday.  I did 30 minutes on the arc trainer (not my fav) and an arm workout.  Today I completed a 3.27-mile run and some abdominal work.

Have a great Thursday!  It’s my Friday – no work for me tomorrow.  Woohoo!  Don’t worry, I’ll still get up early and hit the gym, but you already figured that, didn’t you?

Southern Hospitality and Southern Food

I survived another family reunion.  Even Kevin made it back alive.  Haha!  Actually, I really enjoy seeing the family, so surviving that was easy.  You just have to make it through all the artery-clogging food!  No heart attack here… yet…

Instead of writing out a long, detailed post, I have created a semi-wordless weekend recap. Enjoy!

Go Ahead, Make My Day

Can anyone name that movie?  I know the title of this post is a movie quote, but I can’t remember its movie of origin.  Moving on.  I’d like to take a little time to share five things that are currently making my day.  Enjoy!

1 – I changed it up yesterday.  I usually hit the gym in the morning, but lately I’ve been feeling like this:

sleepy

So instead I got up at the same time to complete an easy 20-minute kickboxing workout video and take my time getting ready for work.  After work, I went to body pump for a total body workout.  I’ll have to skip my workout Friday due to travel plans, so body pump actually covered two gym sessions.  I also ran this morning.  It was a mere 2 miles because of knee issues – courtesy of body pump.

2 – I got to drink my coffee at home today and yesterday due to today’s run and yesterday morning’s home workout.  I love hitting the gym, but drinking my own coffee is such a joy.  Work coffee is downright dreadful!

coffee coffee

I’m not sure if that goofy face is just my excitement or a sign of too much caffeine.

3 – I’m one of the Applegate Farms coupon winners!  I received the coupons Lindsay sent me for winning her giveaway.  Check out her blog if you haven’t already!

Leia wants Applegate goodies; she loves roast beef!

4 – I managed to only eat one flavorless cookie at the office dip party.  I also refrained from cheese dip, ranch dip, spinach dip, sausage dip, and other random chips n’ such.  I did steal a little hummus and pico for the broccoli, a crappy cookie, and my own peach.  All-in-all, I’m proud of myself.

5 – The last thing that is currently making my day is short n’ sweet: OPI Cajun Shrimp nail polish and nude pumps.  Woohoo!

Is it Friday yet???

Back to the daily grind.  Ugh.  Ma’, do I haaaave to go to work today?  I think I’m sick.  (Insert fake cough here!)  The weekend went by waaaaay too fast.  Let’s recap, shall we?

First, I wanted to run Saturday and couldn’t due to an injury.  Instead of running, I sat on my booty and wrote a post about plain vs black coffee – and by the way, I made a mistake.  Ooopsies!  I meant to say “regular” – not “plain.”  Nevertheless, I am still dumbfounded by the fact that regular coffee is not the same as black.  Now… moving on…

Kev, our company, and I had lake fun, beer fun, and dinner fun before indulging in a little more beer fun.  I was the designated driver for the weekend, so my tastebuds didn’t get tooooo much beer fun.  However, I did try a lovely new brew with my bbq bacon burger (heck yea I got it with fries) on Saturday evening.  It was a French Broad 13 Rebels pale ale.  It paired flawlessly with the burger.

French Broad

French Broad Brewery Pale Ale

My hip felt better Sunday, so I finally got to try out my new armband.  I guess tunes make you run faster because I did pretty well – despite running through a hilly nearby neighborhood on a hot day.  Yay!  I did 4.4 miles in 37:22, and the first 4 miles of it were completed in 33:47.  That made me feel pretty good.  I didn’t really want to get up and work out today, but I still got my sweat on.  I did a heavy day of chest + shoulders with 30 minutes on the elliptical.  What a great way to start the day!

Now it’s time for breakfast (my second-favorite time of day).  No more parfaits here; I’m bringin’ back the oats!  Notice the little black things in my uncooked oats.  Those are chia seeds, which I tried for the first time just a week or two ago.

blueberrry chia

Chia, Cha-cha-cha, Chia seeds are the same little buggers sold as “pets” about 5-10 years ago.  So why am I eating these?  Well FitSugar helps to explain how these little buggars pack a strong nutritional punch.  Fiber, calcium, protein, and omega-3s, oh my!  Click here for the nutritional profile.

  • Did you have a good weekend?  What was the best thing you did?
  • Have you tried chia seeds?  If so, what do you think of them?

Fiesta Friday Recap

I hope you all are having a wonderful Saturday so far.  I know I am!  I had a good Friday, a super morning, and I just saw my cat jump into an upright TJ’s bag, which of course led to her toppling over, mewing, and scrambling around to get right-side up again.   Ha.  Kitties are my entertainment.

Anyway… I enjoyed a Dos XX Amber last night when I got home.  It’s one of my favorite beers, so I’m not going to do a full review.  Let’s just describe it as “good and refreshing!”  It’s not the best beer I’ve tasted, and it’s not even the best amber I’ve had.  However, it always hits the spot, fits in my budget, and pairs flawlessly with Mexican food.

Amber

Love the Amber; Hate the Lager

My post-work beverage lead to our decision to ditch the tofu in the fridge and head out for Mexican.  Yum!  I definitely ate tooooo much, and I got a little belly ache after dinner.  Kev walked with me once we got back to the neighborhood, which helped but didn’t really solve the problem.  At least it was delicious!

quesadilla

Mexican Food & Draft Beer

Why am I admitting all this?  Isn’t this a healthy blog?  Well… let’s just say I try to be honest with my readers.  If I have a beer after work (and a big beer at dinner) along with a big plate of cheesy goodness, I don’t want to hide it.  Amanda over at Running with Spoons had a really great post recently about the hidden side of bloggie habits.  Really, it’s good.  Check it out.

After I woke this morning from my food coma, I went for a run.  I completed 4 miles at 8:34 min/mile pace.  Sweet.  My booty is sore from my workout yesterday, but I think stretching it out will help.  I also did a wee bit of abdominal work, but since that’s my least favorite, and since Kevin was waiting on me to go for a 1.5-mile walk, I rushed it.  Cleo kept me company on the mat.

cat pose - yoga

Demonstrating the real "cat pose" in yoga.

Now it’s time to shower and hit the lake.  I’ve got places to go and people to see, so I’m off to continue another fabulous weekend.  I hope you all do the same!

Party Race Anthem

As you all probably already know, today was my 5k.  I didn’t reach my stretch goal of 22:45, but I can’t say I thought I would.  I did, however, get a time of 23:08!  I’m happy with that; I surpassed my main goal of beating last year’s time.  It would have been cool if I had broken 23 minutes, but I’m still happy.  As you can see below, I started today with breakfast.  I actually referred to it as b-fast.  (Get it?  Nerdy pun alert.)

b-fast

B-Fast

Then I listened to this song to pump me up before leaving.  I don’t have a little MP3 player I take on runs, so I had to get a little pre-party excitement going.

I’m not a Corona fan, but I think my lime top would go well with one!

The Running Lime

The Running Lime

Run run run!  Kev walked over to Starbucks during the race, but he got his cappuccino in time to take my picture.  This race was so much more hilly than I expected.  It still wasn’t as hilly as the 10k I ran in November, but whew!

Race

Approx 2.85 Miles Down!

You know you worked hard when you make sweat marks on your “dri-fit” shirt.

Whew!

Is it beer-thirty yet???

In other news…

I will be attending a tasting this evening at a pizza place, so you can bet I’ll also enjoy some pizza.  Yup, my Garmin watch said I burned the caloric equivalent of two lagers, not even the higher-calorie IPAs.  Why again do I run so hard???  Ha.

Lastly, sweet Lenna over at Czech Vegan nominated me for the “7 Things About Me” Award.  It makes my day that a bloggie friend thought of me!  Here are 7 things…

Blog Award

  1. I really like dumb, inappropriate movies.  Serious, I just saw Sgt. Bilko for the first time last night and loved it!
  2. I am fascinated by the human body, but I get too grossed out to ever study it seriously.
  3. I become easily bored on beach vacations.  I love them… for about two days.
  4. I become angry when my friends get married and don’t like to party with me anymore.  Married does not have to = lame!
  5. I am happy that I never had to live alone, but I still prefer to have one night a week in the house to myself.  Only child syndrome?
  6. When people are discussing their children in social situations, I seriously have to bite my tongue to not talk about my kitties.
  7. I hate shopping.  I mean, I think I like it, but then after shopping around the mall for a while, I get frustrated and verrrrry angry.
There.  Those are seven things I betcha’ didn’t know.  Now I’m passing the nomination on to…
