Sweatin’ on Saturday

I have a new move for you today, and I’m pretty pumped about it.  You know what else I’m pumped about?  My pumped up kicks!  They make training much more comfy!  (And I just like saying “pumped up kicks” because I love that song...)

Okay… here’s the video.  This is me explaining my version of the bench step-up.  Yes, I still feel goofy watching myself on film, but due to the success of last week’s cross-back lunge video, I thought I’d make another.  Enjoy!

If you try this move, please let me know by linking up or commenting.  I’d love to know if y’all like it.  I’m also open to other suggestions.  You know I’m not physical therapist, personal trainer, or anything like that, but if you have a trouble spot you’d like to tone, I can tell you what works for me!

Lastly – don’t be jealous, but this was my awesome dinner.  I had spaghetti squash and meat-less balls.  Yum!  Kevin had real pasta.

Our friends that came over for wine last night brought bake-shop brownies.  I avoided them all night, but finally had a piece of a peanut butter one to be nice.  I was so proud of myself for not going overboard, especially after a couple glasses of Chianti!  I even got them to take the leftovers home.  Woohoo!

In addition, I have already completed my quick run for today.  I often forget how good it feels to make good choices.

Have a great weekend!

Sweatin’ on Saturday

Helllloooooo!  I will be going for a short run and finishing up some pilates today before tailgating with buddies, but I wanted to share a move with you first.  It’s my first vlog post, so I hope you like it.  Stefanie mentioned creating a weekend blog-hop party, so you can see if other bloggers have linked up exercises, routines, and fitness inspiration at her site, The New Healthy.

Okay… on with the exercise.  This is a cross-back lunge.  It works your quads, booty, and that annoying saddlebag area.  It also kind of incorporates your core, especially when done “at tempo.”

It’s worth noting that I do not believe in spot-reduction.  You can tone certain areas, but you can’t just lose extra flab around one area, like your hips, butt, thighs, nose, or whatever.  Nevertheless, who doesn’t want a toned tush???  Exactly!  Now on with the video…

Thanks for bearing through that atrocious video.  I guess I could have re-recorded, but I’m a busy girl.  I could have also not worn a “Southern Comfort” shirt, but it’s one of my favorite workout tanks.

After your workout, don’t forget to refuel!

What I Ate Wednesday

Is it Friday yet???  No?!?  Okay, then it must be Wednesday at least.  You know what that means – it’s What I Ate Wednesday time.  Woohoo!

First, I want to share a little bit about What I Worked.  As I mentioned, I was in a funk Monday, but I woke up feeling refreshed and ready for action Tuesday morning.  My great workout helped power my good mood, and I bet it gave my metabolism quite a boost too.  I completed the ab work for my July workout, and I did this 45-minute elliptical routine.

Work has been crazy this week.  I stayed late last night and will go in early today.  Sooooo, that means I had to skip my workout this morning.  Have no fear – body pump is here… or at least it will be come 6:15 tonight!

Now that the workouts are out of the way, let’s get into the goodies.  This week I’ve been enjoying my three-part breakfast: pre-workout rice cake, 70-calories of protein shake after the workout, and oats with fruit once I finally get settled at work a couple hours later.  I’ve been loving breakfast lately because I splurged for cherries at the store.  Totally worth it!

I even threw some NuNaturals alcohol-free vanilla stevia into the oats.  Not bad.  I tried putting some in work coffee.  Very bad.  Sticking to tea from here on out…

Lunch is a salad with goddess dressing.  That sounds boring, but at least it’s pretty.  I also enjoy a few almonds on the side.

Snack is half a bell pepper and homemade yummus (aka: hummus).  I had been wanting to make my own hummus for a while, and I finally did it.  Yay!  It was easy, but I don’t know that I’ll do it often.  Tahini isn’t cheap, so it’s not all that much cheaper to make it yourself – especially when you compare it to TJ’s low hummus prices.

hummus = yummus

Dinner has been great so far this week.  I had salsa chicken two nights and light dinner Monday night to make up for my funky mood.  Tonight will be baked chicken (no added fat in cooking), a mini baked sweet potato, and steamed broccoli.  Yum, yum, and more yum.

After dinner a few nights this week, I’ve snacked on cheesecake ice cream.  It’s sooooo good!  I felt hoodwinked after buying it though.  It’s labeled “naturally flavored,” but I’m not so sure anything in it is all that natural.  There are few FDA regulations on “natural” claims, yet I still don’t always read every package like I should.

cream de chemicals

At the store I thought this ice cream said “natural,” not “naturally flavored” (impulse buy?!?), but I still feel tricked.  The mile-long ingredients list includes HFCS, corn syrup, modified food starch, hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil, and more.  I think I’m going to start calling it ice chemicals instead, but at least it’s yummy!

Be sure to check out Peas and Crayons’ WIAW blog hop to see all the other great eats!

What was the best thing you ate today?

Are there any ingredients you avoid, or do you buy what looks/tastes good?

Jeanette Jenkins Workout

Good morning!  Here I am in the lobby, loving some complimentary coffee and Internet.  I enjoyed another Trader Joe’s bagel with whipped light cream cheese in the room, just like I did yesterday.  Kevin and I began the day Wednesday walking around Hollywood… and making another trip to Trader Joe’s.  The TJ’s is so much bigger here!  We saw the Chinese theater, the Kodak theater, and lots of shady stuff in between.  Bail bonds, anyone?

Hollywood

Can you see the "Hollywood" sign? It's there. Promise.

Popsugar Inc. picked me up and brought me to the studios just in time for lunch.  We all had salads, but the salads came with hard, greasy breadsticks, which I ate and sort of enjoyed.  I’m not the kind of girl to turn down bread!  I got a quick makeup touch-up before Jeanette arrived for our shoot.  (Recognize that outfit from my race day???)

We filmed a quick workout video that should be posted on FitSugar some time in June.  I hope it’s soon!  I thought I was going to get to workout with Jeanette, but all we did was the video.  Luckily that was still pretty cool.  I just wish I had known to workout on my own at the hotel before arriving.  Jeanette sweetly offered to mail me a collection of her other workout DVDs.  Yay!  I think she felt badly that I didn’t get a workout.  🙂  Nice lady.  Very high energy and very loud.  But very nice lady, indeed.

After the shoot, I was driven back to the hotel.  I quickly showered, and one of Kevin’s friends picked us up to show us the town.  We ate sushi (well, I had seaweed salad and salmon sashimi) and drove around to see the sights.  I really wanted to hit up some of the bars we passed, but Kev and I were pretty worn out again.  Sigh.  Tonight, we will see a hint of night life.  It’s “the thing” to do here, and I can’t believe we still haven’t!
