Super Lazy Saturday

It’s Saturday, and I’m feeling lazy as ever. ¬†It’s 7:45, and I’m still in my pajamas. ¬†Luckily they’re my favorite pajamas, and I’m getting a little kitty lovin’ while blogging. ¬†It was a rainy morning, and even though the rain stopped, I still can’t seem to get my butt to the gym. Yeah, I’ll get there, must maybe about 30 minutes later than anticipated.

I want to thank everyone for you open-minded comments on yesterday’s post. ¬†The vegetarian/ vegan/ pescetarian/ whatevertarian debate hits close to home for a lot of us, and I’m happy you accept me for being a human garbage disposal. ¬†Seriously – I eat (and generally enjoy) just about everything.

In case you too are having a lazy Saturday, here are some links to keep you busy… well, busy doing basically nothing, that is.

Lastly, I wanted to share a book with you all. ¬†I finished The Poacher’s Son yesterday. ¬†It was a fast and very entertaining read. ¬†I thoroughly recommend it.

A Spin-Off Kind of Saturday

I wanted to attend spin class today.  I never get to spin anymore, and that makes me sad.  I was a weekly spinner at my old gym for 3 reasons:

  1. They had a Friday class that started super early. I pre-burned my beers.
  2. The instructor totally kicked my butt.  I walked out of that class with jello legs and wet clothes every time.
  3. The instructor also refrained from ‚Äújumps.‚Ä̬† I can stay up a while for climbs and some intervals, but my knees don‚Äôt like jumps one bit.

I quit going because no classes at my current gym meet my schedule.¬† The one today starts at 9:15 a.m. ¬†There are a few reasons I probably won’t spin this morning. ¬†I prefer to get a better head start on the day, and Kevin and I have a lot to do. ¬†We are doing a few renovations to our guest bathroom, and we want to finish everything this weekend while still allowing a little time for some boating.

Also, I wanted cereal this morning. ¬†I ate cereal. ¬†I ate 2 to 3 servings of cereal. ¬†I’m also drinking coffee. ¬†Class starts in an hour. ¬†I think this is a recipe for disaster.

I’ll get around to spin… one day…

I’d like to fill you in on my Friday, and I have just the pictures to do it!

I went to the gym, and I had a great workout. ¬†After lifting (big sets yesterday of about 12-15 reps), I used the art trainer for 25 minutes. ¬†At the 5-, 10-, and 15-minute marks I dropped to the floor to do 10 pushups. ¬†I know that doesn’t sound like much, but pushups get my heart rate up; they’re like sprints for my arms. ¬†Also, since it was chest/back day, this machine and my additional pushups really helped burn out the muscles.

I don't always look like a ragamuffin at the gym, just most of the time.

I did not leave the gym in curlers.  I did, however, leave in running shoes.  I brought other shoes, but I walk three blocks to work, plus lots of stairs.

I tried my overnight oats in a jar when I got to work. ¬†I should have had something with more protein. ¬†Actually, I should have had something else period. ¬†These were edible, but I’m not a fan. ¬†Oats should be hot… or in muffins, or granola, or meatloaf, or smoothies… Okay, oats can be in a lot of things, but cold milk in a jar is not one of those things.

Later, Kevin and I spent some time at Lowe’s. ¬†I get serious A.D.D. in home improvement stores. ¬† We ¬†were going to have champagne once we finished working on the house, buttttt Kev wanted to open it early. ¬†Needless to say, I did not object.

For dinner, I made pasta with meat sauce, and it was sooooooo delicious! ¬†I love that simple meal! ¬†I added extra oregano, garlic, onion, and tomato, but it is still pretty darn basic. ¬†I also have to recommend Organic Whole Wheat Penne with Milled Flax by Hodgson Mill. ¬†It’s my all-time favorite and can be purchased in bulk at Amazon.

Okay, now it’s time to finish my coffee and get back to work!

July Workout

After my kinda-sorta-but-not-really time off from working out, it’s time to get down to business.  Did anyone try out my June workout?  If so, I’m curious as to what you thought.  It really built up my backside, and while that was one of the goals, I’m not sure I need to keep building.  So this workout doesn’t have quite as much booty work, but maybe you’ll still sweat your booty off, if that’s a goal of yours.

The two split-style workouts are similar, but it’s important to change up your workouts every four to six weeks, even if the changes are small.  (I want enough time to build muscle without reaching a plateau.)  For simplicity, I usually change it up monthly.  Next month, I hope to throw in more circuits and supersets, so stay tuned for the August workout.

This routine is not advanced, but this is not for beginners either.¬† I recommend completing 3 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions per set, depending on if it‚Äôs a heavy day or light day.¬† I change it up by throwing in drop sets, pyramid sets, 21s, or big sets of 15 reps every once in a while.¬† Just do what feels best for you, but 3 sets of 10 is the perfect place to start. ¬†I’m not sure how easy or hard it is yet, since I have only just started it today.

Monday

  • Barbell Curl
  • Twisting Resistance Band Curl (or with Cable)
  • Resistance Band Triceps Extension (or Cable)
  • Dips <– hardcore dips or modified bench dips, whatever works for you
  • Reverse Curls (Feel these in your forearms) – I did it holding two 5-lb dumbbells and followed that immediately with some weighted punches and jabs to burn things out
  • Complete 35 minutes of cardio.¬† I often opt for the stair climber on Mondays.

Wednesday

Be sure to get your legs parallel to the ground, but don’t let your knees pass your toes.

Thursday

  • Run or Walk at Home ‚Äď Enjoy Summer!¬† I usually go for about 3 miles.
  • Finish with a cool down, stretches, and yoga.¬† The yoga should challenge you.

Friday

I’ll most likely do this with an EZ Curl Bar on a bench, but you get the idea.

Saturday

  • Go for a long run, walk, or bike ride.¬† Enjoy the weather!¬† I run about 4.5 miles on Saturdays.
  • Finish with a cool down, stretches, and yoga or pilates.¬† The yoga should challenge you.

I hope you enjoy the workout.  If you give it a shot, let me know what you think of it.

Do you switch up your routine daily, monthly, or other?

How much cardio do you usually do per week?

I’m Not At Work

Yup. ¬†I’m not at work today. ¬†That is big news because I’m so friggin happy about it. ¬†It’s okay… I’ll move on to other news now so that I’m not rubbing it in, but I just had to share that tidbit of info. ¬†See, that’s why the blog post is late today. ¬†I got up at 6 instead of 5 to workout, and then I had a dermatologist appointment.
*Notice the Slick Segway to New Topic*
Speaking of dermatologist, my Eat for Good Skin diet only sort of worked. ¬†I think my skin’s tone has become more even, but it’s still breaking out like crazy. ¬†Bummer. ¬†I am now on a new, slightly scary¬†prescription for my acne. ¬†It is supposed to make my potassium levels skyrocket, so I have to lay off the bananas, potatoes, and other goodies. ¬†In addition, it’s mainly used for those with high blood pressure. ¬†Great. ¬†I already have low but healthy but blood pressure, so I’m going to be walking around like a zombie until this clears up a bit. ¬†Wonderful.
Moving on…
I started my weekend with a glass of wine, an ounce of parm cheese, and three kalamata olives. ¬†I tried to take this picture…

but then this happened.  Thanks Cleo for making the picture much more interesting.

I'd reach for it too if I lived off dry kibble!

After that, I had Italian on the brain.  Should I have cooked healthy Italian?  Yes.  Did I?  No.  This was dinner.

Unhealthy and Delicious

I’d love to tell you Kevin and I split that, but that would be a lie. ¬†I’d also like to say I ate half and saved the rest for later, but that too would be a lie. ¬†So let’s just not talk about pizza any more.
On a positive note, last night’s pizza led to a killer green monster smoothie today and an awesome workout. ¬†I picked up very heavy things and put them down quite a few times.

Thanks, Gina, for posting this commercial.  I love it.

The meat-head in the video above reminds me of something I wanted to mention. ¬†I received a lovely compliment today at the gym. ¬†Another morning regular was there, and he’s a total meat-head. ¬†We occasionally say hello, but we don’t talk much. ¬†Today he told me that it looked like I had recently put on a good bit of muscle, particularly in my legs. ¬†I would generally be offended if a man said this to me because it would be really creepy, but given the source, it really made me happy.

We talked a wee bit about protein supplementation and my fav move for ultimate quad definition. ¬†His comment pumped me up, and I totally rocked my bench step-ups. ¬†I went until total failure on my left side, which felt odd. ¬†When I tried to step up one last time, my leg said, “Sorry Tiff, but we’re done here,” and I was okay with that.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. ¬†I’m off to see the in-laws. ¬†Hopefully I’ll get a run in tomorrow… if I can feel my legs!

Do you talk to other regulars in the gym or on the trails?  What do you think about gym compliments/remarks Рcreepy or cool?

Is it Friday yet???

Back to the daily grind.¬† Ugh.¬† Ma’, do I haaaave to go to work today?¬† I think I’m sick.¬† (Insert fake cough here!)¬† The weekend went by waaaaay too fast.¬† Let’s recap, shall we?

First, I wanted to run Saturday and couldn’t due to an injury.¬†¬†Instead of¬†running, I sat on my booty and¬†wrote a post about plain vs black coffee – and by the way, I made a mistake.¬† Ooopsies!¬† I meant to say “regular” – not “plain.”¬† Nevertheless, I am still dumbfounded by the fact that regular coffee is not the same as black.¬† Now… moving on…

Kev, our company, and I had lake fun, beer fun, and dinner fun before indulging in a little more beer fun.¬† I was the designated driver for the weekend, so my tastebuds didn’t get tooooo much beer fun.¬† However, I did try a lovely new brew with my bbq bacon burger (heck yea I got it with fries) on Saturday evening.¬† It was a French Broad 13 Rebels pale ale.¬†¬†It paired flawlessly with the burger.

My hip felt better Sunday, so I finally got to try out my new armband.¬† I guess tunes make you run faster because I did pretty well – despite running through a hilly nearby¬†neighborhood on a hot day.¬† Yay!¬† I did 4.4 miles in 37:22, and the first 4 miles of it were completed in 33:47.¬† That made me feel pretty good.¬† I didn’t really want to get up and work out today, but I still got my sweat on.¬† I did a heavy day of chest + shoulders with 30 minutes on the elliptical.¬† What a great way to start the day!

Now it’s time for breakfast (my second-favorite time of day).¬† No more parfaits here; I’m bringin’ back the oats!¬† Notice the little black things in my uncooked oats.¬† Those are chia seeds, which I tried for the first time just a week or two ago.

Chia, Cha-cha-cha, Chia seeds are the same little buggers sold as “pets” about 5-10 years ago.¬† So why am I eating these?¬† Well FitSugar helps to explain how these little buggars pack a strong nutritional punch.¬† Fiber, calcium, protein, and omega-3s, oh my!¬† Click here for the nutritional profile.

  • Did you have a good weekend?¬† What was the best thing you did?
  • Have you tried chia seeds?¬† If so, what do you think of them?
